The drug ayahuasca: CEREMONY OF THE TUPI PEOPLE. Engraving, glass & frame
Grafik, karta. 1673.
Gott skick.
A Ceremony of the Tupi people. Original copper engraving, mounted under glass in a later frame. Religious dance by the Tupi people in Brazil which, if I understand correctly, was followed by the consumption of ayahuasca: “When the old man has had enough of the potion, they begin early in the morning from the first house in the village and there empty all the jars and so on, hut by hut, until not a single drop remains. The one who drinks and vomits last wins the greatest honour.” First published in Arnoldus Montanus’ De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America (1671). This copper engraving may derive either from that edition or from the German one of 1673. Engraved by Jacob van Meurs.
22.5 × 19 cm. 0.270 kg.
A fine copper engraving. Presented in a solid later frame, well preserved.
