A series of stories about the historic Royal Palaces, this work includes fifteen stories about the tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, the banqueting house, Whitehall and Kew Palace.

"Delicious taster of the rich [hi]stories behind London's five historic royal palaces! – This book achieves exactly what it set out to do. There are glances at well known stories (such as the executions of Charles I, Anne Bolyene and Lady Jane Grey) as well as lesser known ones (such as a job description of the royal dusters and a concise history of the Tower Menagerie). All are told in eloquent succinct prose that goes so well with a good, simultaneously leisurely and scholarly history text. Accompanying are plenty of illustrations - even if a lot more can still be desired for - and a timeline.
• Personally I think the book is very stylishly presented, with foldout flaps, and cuttings on the front cover. It is made to appeal to children without looking chilidish and repulsive to grown-ups, which is in keeping with the content. It is not serving up a banquet of history; the content is not extensive and tiresomely aware of political correctness. But what is served is wholesomely furnishing your general knowledge.
• There is a bias towards dwelling more on the Tower of London and Hampton Court - the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace only get a story each - but given the roles they actually played in history this is not all that surprising.
