The Royal Botanical Expedition by Jose Celestino Mutis to the Kingdom of New Granada between 1783 and 1808 was the most important scientific and cultural mission embarked upon by Spain in the New World during the Age of Enlightenment and one of the earliest attempt by Colombian personality and bestow on it the capacity to assume the Bolivarian feat. Mutis's work in the fields of mathematics, medicine, botany and art known through studies by recognised expeerts on the subjects. It describe, in the light of the most recent studies , Mutis's herbarium and plate collection, which have both been preserved for over a century in the Royal Botanical Garden.
