The capture of the fort of Povaçon. Original copper engraving, mounted under glass in a later frame. The governor of Brazil, Johan Maurits of Nassau-Siegen, drives out the Portuguese. The scene shows the capture of the fort of Povaçon, or Boaventura near Porto Calvo in 1637. The fort subsequently remained in the hands of the West India Company until 1645. First published in Arnoldus Montanus’ De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America (1671). This copper engraving may derive either from that edition or from the German one of 1673.
